Big Muddy Submissions

A Journal of the Mississippi River Valley

Big Muddy is an online journal that annually publishes an 8 x 8 perfectbound, color-cover, print issue. that explores multidisciplinary issues and events.

Big Muddy publishes:

    • Fiction
    • Poetry
    • Essays/Creative Nonfiction
    • Book Reviews (print issue only)

Big Muddy accepts submissions of all types year-round.

Other Guidelines:

  • Manuscripts must be high-quality
  • Original, previously unpublished
  • Simultaneous submissions are ok, just please let us know immediately if your manuscript is accepted elsewhere.
  • Have all necessary citations and documentation in MLA or APA format if applicable
  • If submitting photos or other images as electronic files, please send at a resolution of 300 dpi.

Please allow at least 8-12 weeks for a response.

Payment to contributors is two copies. Contributors receive a 25% discount on additional issues; contact us to order.

Payment to reviewers is one copy.

Guidelines for Review Submissions to Big Muddy:

  • Big Muddy is dedicated to reviewing full-length of any genre books from independent, university, and small presses.
  • Reviews should be double-spaced pages (approximately 300-500 words)
  • All documentation should be in appropriate style for your field.
  • We prefer only a minimum of summary. Your educated, supported opinion is most valuable to the review.
  • Reviewers are sent one copy of the issue in which their review is published. The review becomes the property of Southeast Missouri State University Press.

Big Muddy is published every Spring and every Fall.

Subscriptions are $20 annually, or $38 for a 2-year subscription (U.S. currency).
Outside U.S., add $10 postage and handling.

Prepayment is required.


Sample Copy

A sample copy of Big Muddy can be purchased for $6 (postage paid). Our staff will choose a back issue to send. Limit one sample copy per household.

We encourage submissions that are interdisciplinary in approach. Topics related to the Mississippi River Valley are encouraged and given preference, though a direct relation to the area is not necessary.
